HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON THE COMPREHENSIVE REGIONAL IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR AVIATION SAFETY IN AFRICA ICAO HEADQUARTERS, MONTRÉAL, CANADA, 17 SEPTEMBER 2007 |
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in close cooperation with African civil aviation
authorities and air transport industry stakeholders, has developed a
Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Safety in Africa, aimed at sustainable
improvements in aviation safety throughout the continent. This Plan supports the commitment of Africa
to move closer toward the world aviation safety level.
This Plan reflects ICAO's overall strategy, as identified in its Strategic Objectives and further
detailed in the Global Aviation Safety
Plan (GASP), which represents a performance-based approach focused on activities with the highest opportunity
to improve aviation safety.
The ICAO Global Aviation safety Plan (GASP), was developed on the basis of the Global Aviation
Safety Roadmap which was prepared by the Industry Safety Strategy Group (ISSG) working with ICAO. The GASP can be seen as
the ICAO strategy to address the focus areas and related objectives that have been defined in the Roadmap as
vital to the enhancement of safety levels within global commercial aviation. The GASP also establishes
coordination mechanisms to ensure that both the GASP and the Roadmap are maintained up-to-date in a
coordinated way. The GASP defines 12 specific global safety initiatives designed to support the
implementation of aviation safety objectives that have been accepted as vital to the enhancement of aviation
safety.
