About Us

The Flight Safety and Human Factors Programme at the International Civil Aviation Organization is directed by Captain Dan Maurino. He works in the Personnel Licensing and Training Section, which is under ICAO’s Air Navigation Bureau.

Dan started with ICAO in 1989. A former airline captain, and still an active pilot, Dan is a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). He represents ICAO at the IATA Human Factors Working Group and the Safety Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Flight Safety Foundation's ICARUS Committee, and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Captain Maurino is associate editor of the International Journal of Aviation Psychology (IJAP), and a member of the editorial board of the Human Factors and Aerospace Safety Journal. He is co-author of Beyond Aviation Human Factors. His awards include the First Flight Safety Foundation/Airbus Industrie Award for Achievement in Human Factors and Aviation Safety (1999), the Flight Safety Foundation/Aviation Week & Space Technology Distinguished Service Award (2000), the Royal Aeronautical Society Roger Gray Medal (2001) and the Captain A G Vette Flight Safety Research Trust Award (2002).
